Number of new jobseekers falls
The number of jobseekers rose by 0.5% to 222,900 in December 2009, from 221,700 in November, the Israel National Employment Service reported today. However, the number of people unemployed for at least two days fell by 0.1% to 206,500 in December, continuing the downward trend that began in July.
The Employment Service also reported that the number of new jobseekers fell by 1.7% in December from November, to 20,400, in trend figures. The new jobseekers included 12,411 who were laid off in December, compared with 14,236. The total figure includes recently discharged soldiers and people who voluntarily left previous jobs as well. The number of newly unemployed averaged about 10,000 per month before the economic crisis, and the December figure is still far from normal.
