Motorola Israel to reduce workforce in first quarter
Motorola Israel Ltd. is planning reductions in its workforce in the first quarter of 2010. It will fire 20 employees as part of the closing of projects, and another 20 will leave as they reach retirement age.
Motorola Israel has just under 3,000 employees at its development and services centers around the country.
During 2009, Motorola Israel fired about 80 employees from its factory in Arad and office in Tel Aviv. These employees worked in administration, support, development, and production.
Earlier this month, Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT) sold MIRS Communications Ltd. to Hot Cable Systems Media Ltd. (TASE: HOT) controlling shareholder Patrick Drahi, after a tender process that lasted several months. Also earlier this month, Motorola Israel general manager Elisha Yanay announced that he will step down after 40 years at the company.
Motorola Israel said in response, "Over the upcoming quarter, about 20 employees will retire from company as they reach retirement age, and about another 20 employees will leave due to the scaling back of a project as part of the company's readiness for 2010."
