Steinitz blames foreign workers for rising unemployment
Minister of Finance Yuval Steinitz today told the Sderot Conference on Social Issues that foreign workers were to blame for high unemployment. He said, "Foreign workers are the reason for the rise in unemployment and the widening of social gaps in Israel."
Steinitz pledged to decrease the number of foreign workers in Israel.
He said, "I will work towards raising the penalties for Israelis who employ illegal foreign workers."
He added, "Foreign workers are not competing with high-tech employees or brokers but rather the poorer population - the cooks and dishwashers."
Steinitz also said that the Ministry of Finance is examining the allocation of a special budget for building a fence along the border with Egypt to prevent infiltration of African refugees and other illegal foreign workers.
