Employment Service: Jobseekers down 0.8% in December

ינואר 28, 2007. Globes: Shay Niv
The Israel National Employment Service has reported a 0.8% drop in the number of jobseekers in December 2006, compared with November. The fall in the number of jobseekers over recent months has been reflected by figures published by the Central Bureau of Statistics, which put the number of registered job seekers at 204,800 in December. The figures do not include unemployed people who ceased attending their local employment office after their entitlement to unemployment benefit lapsed.

A breakdown of the figures reveals that the number of jobseekers with degrees fell 0.5% while the number of jobseekers without degrees fell 1%, and the number of income support claimants fell 0.8%.

The report also said that 40% of jobseekers were located in development towns and Arab communities, a rate that is significantly higher than their proportion of the total population. The proportion of jobseekers in southern and northern Israel was 10.4% of the total number of jobseekers, compared with the national average of 6.6%. The proportion in Jerusalem was 4% and 3.9% in the Dan region.
