Lousy Cover Letters

Dear Mr. M-, ‎

I would like to apply for the position of graphic designer that you posted on ‎Israemploy. I believe I would be an excellent addition to ABC Design. My ‎resume is attached, and I look forward to hearing from you.

It’s a lousy letter - keep in mind the following:

  • Never send a cover letter where you can change one ‎word and send it to another company a minute later.
  • Say something ‎specific about the company that attracts you. A technique they use, their ‎clientele, their mission.
  • Connect that to your own experience.
  • If you're ‎writing to Google, you can tell them how strongly you feel about making ‎information accessible to everyone. Describe how you created a new ‎database at your previous employer, and how better access to data ‎increased company-wide efficiency.
  • If you are responding to an ad, ‎address the requirements in the ad, especially any requirement not clearly ‎filled (at first glance) by your resume.
  • If a company is looking for a ‎technical writer, and your last job was a call center manager, point out in ‎the letter that you wrote the employee training manual, and contributed an ‎article each month to the company newsletter.
  • Don’t repeat your resume in ‎your cover letter, but highlight the most relevant experience, and add ‎details that might not appear in a resume.‎

Make them want to meet you. Don’t send form letters‎
